The 24-70 f/2.8 S is the sharpest 24-70 I've ever tested. However my copy was tilted and caused noticeably softness on one side @ 50mm and 70mm, even up through f/5.6. The 24-70 f/4 S kit lens performs admirably as well, although the f/2.8 is a bit sharper at the edges esp at the wide end.
